"LANDFALLS ALWAYS A SURPIRSE"

That quote comes from Max Mayfield, Director, National Hurricane Center, who was just interviewed on local Houston-area television. He's been in the meteorology business for 33 years now and even with the majority of computer models now showing Rita likely to make landfall in the Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas, area (northeast of Galveston towards the western Louisiana border), he's saying that this hurricane could still change direction back towards Houston-Galveston or beyond.

Mr. Mayfield further informed that he had just received information from an Air Force reconnaissance plane and Rita is still a Category 4 hurricane and could in fact strengthen tonight, although the likelihood at this juncture is that it will be a Category 4 storm when it reaches land.

The next update will come at 9:30pm CDT this evening.
