I read Hampton Sides' "Ghost Soldiers -- The Forgotten Epic Story of WWII's Most Dramatic Mission" and found it enthralling in the way that most I-just-can't-put-it-down books capture our imagination and interest, shutting out the outside world for us during the period of time the author has us firmly in his grasp. I love history and particularly military history, and this book was a great read.

The just-released movie, "The Great Raid," which is, in part, based on Sides' stirring account of the dramatic, heroic rescue of POWs held at a brutal Japanese prison camp, gets a strong go-see recommendation from popular blogger Betsy Newmark.

That's good enough for me! I'll be going.
