In a front page, above-the-fold story in todays' edition of the "Houston Chronicle" (registration required), it is reported that the federal government has earmarked $250 million annually in a four-year program to help hospitals "cover the cost of treating illegal immigrants in emergency rooms beginning today." Texas is to receive $46 million, second only to California's $71 million. This, of course, is funded by your tax dollars, Folks, and is among the many costs that Presidente Vicente Fox's corrupt Mexican government is not required to pay, owing to his administration's encouragement of illegal emigration to the United States.

And, mind you, the U.S. federal government's subsidization of state-level, hospital emergency room costs for illegals is but a drop in the bucket. Just to give you an idea of the magnitude of this single element of the overall costs we all defray because of illegal immigration, in Harris County, Texas (the county in which Houston is located) alone hospital care for illegal immigrants will total about $50 million in 2005!

Federal officials said hospitals could apply for reimbursement for emergency services from the time a patient arrives until that patient is considered stabilized.

"The funding provides relief, but it does not resolve the underlying problem — verifying the extent of illegal immigrant care and eliminating fraud with the system," said Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas.

It was unclear to what extent the federal funds would offset the cost of treating illegal immigrants. Hutchison said Texas hospitals pay out "more than $150 million in uncompensated emergency care" each year.

Texas hospital officials believe the actual figure is much higher, saying that state hospitals provide billions of dollars in uncompensated care each year, of which a large portion goes to illegal immigrants.

You may recall President Bush thumping his chest during last year's presidential campaign over the passage in December, 2003, of the Prescription Drug Act. This was an integral element in the president's appeal to senior citizens to return him to the White House for a second term. Did you know that attached to that bill signed into law by the president was a $1 billion fund earmarked for the medical care of illegal aliens? Bet you didn't. The president never talked about that, nor did his opponent, John Kerry.

At a time when so many American citizens are without healthcare insurance or have seen their healthcare benefits eroded by employers who, because of double-digit cost increases, have been forced to raise employee-paid premiums, co-pays, and deductibles, this news ought to rankle. When is enough enough? You fend for your own familiy and how many others? You're a citizen of the United States of America, but you pay through the nose for millions of illegal aliens in this country who live off a good portion of your tax dollars while funneling home to Mexico billions of dollars in remittances each year.

If you're fed up, as you ought to be, why not sign this online petition and send a message to the White House and to Congress that you want action taken now to secure our borders and to draw up meaningful immigration reform legislation. It's high time we take umbrage with and do something about the stonewalling in Washington on an illegal immigration problem that is out-of-control and costing this country dearly -- in its national security and its treasure.

Fact is, we're being invaded and our border states are being colonized.
