JACK NICLAUS' 17-MONTH OLD GRANDSON DROWNS

Jack Nicklaus, the greatest professional golfer of all time and long known as one of the game's most devoted, family-oriented men, has lost a grandchild through tragic circumstances, reports "Sports Illustrated." Jake Walter Nicklaus, a 17-month old toddler and the son of Steve Nicklaus, one of Jack's four adult sons, was pronounced dead late yesterday afternoon after emergency responders and hospital personnel were unable to revive him following what appears to be a drowning accident at his parents' home. A nanny was looking after the toddler and Steve Nicklaus' 4-year old son at the time of the mishap.

I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the entire Nicklaus' family. Jack Nicklaus is more than a superb athlete; he's also a wonderful man, good father and grandfather, and an athlete of grace and dignity. This will be very hard on Jack and his wife Barbara. They, and son Steve and his wife, will be in our thoughts and prayers.
