Pope John Paul II has been hospitalized this evening, owing to breathing difficulties that may be the result of an inflamed throat brought on by a bout with the flu. The 84 year old Pontiff has been in declining health for some time now, struggling principally with Parkinson's disease, but enduring other maladies as well. According to this Associated Press report, a Vatican official termed as a breathing crisis the need for the Pope to be rushed to the hospital.

The Pontiff will be in this writer's thoughts and prayers, and no doubt those of countless millions worldwide -- Catholic and non-Catholic alike -- who revere him as a beloved servant of God.
