SPECIAL FIRST GET-TOGETHER

Great-Granny & Austin Burgess Higgins

On Christmas Day (2004), my wife Cathy, my mother-in-law Jean, and I were about to set out from Lexington to Louisville to visit family and, for the three of us, to see the new grandbaby, Austin Burgess Higgins, for the very first time. Instead (and it was a frightful experience for her), Cathy's mother began feeling poorly and we had to rush her to the hospital. She had a first time ever heart problem, requiring hospitalization, but recovered nicely, was released the following day, and by late afternoon, the day after Christmas (and braving the hour and a half drive in wintry weather from Lexington to Louisville despite her fatigue), held three weeks old Austin for the first time in what was a poignant moment for all of us. You just can't keep a "Great Granny" down when there's a new baby to hold. My love and best wishes to my wonderful mother-in-law (and most prolific cyberspace pen pal) for a continued and complete recovery.
